Swallowtails!

Great Mormon

Common Bluebottle
We had recently gone to this river for my mother-in-law's last rites. I noticed several butterflies mud-puddling on a sandy stretch. The first shot also has an Emigrant fluttering about in the foreground.

The second picture shows the Great Mormon butterfly/Papilio memnon flying close to the ground. Although I have seen this magnificent butterfly many times, this is my first attempt at capturing it. Sadly, not a close shot. My book of butterflies says that the females of the species are seen near flowers and food plants whereas males are usually seen mud-puddling.

The last picture was taken in my backyard. I was cleaning this area and had poured a bucket of water. Just then this beautiful swallowtail landed to quench its thirst. It remained for a few minutes and gave me enough time to take some pictures!

The Common Bluebottle/Graphium sarpedon is said to prefer wetter, wooded regions. They are avid mud-puddlers and are seen in large groups in damp patches. Google has several such images. They are found in South and South-east Asia as well as Australia where they are also called the Blue Triangle butterflies.

Swallowtails are always my favourite, them and all the other butterflies from the papillionidae family! We've had several great mormons emerge this past few months already and a handful of birdwings (in fact, I'm expecting one tomorrow!)

It may interest you to know the Great Mormon female has several forms (like the common mormon) out of these forms, what many consider the rarest and most beautiful are only found in India. :)

Thank you, Kanak, for your comment on my Ladybird! I have really enjoyed the beauty of your Butterflies!

I've been a poor Blogger of late as we have been moving house from Wales to England! I hope to get back a bit into the swim of it now we are here in Suffolk.

I'm so sorry to hear about the bereavement in your family.

We have it here too, however if always fly high and fast and I haven't spotted them on the ground, maybe because we dont have puddles as our soil is easily drained. I haven't even taken a shot of that, my envy. The other one which has greenish circles, which is also a swallowtail is also common here but also miss my shots. The two of them are always my disappointment.
