The few potted lemon plants that I grow have been hosts to caterpillars of the Common Mormon swallowtail butterflies. The other day I was very happy to see three caterpillars on this small plant. If everything goes right, they may turn out to be like the one pictured below (a female). The male does not have the red markings.

This butterfly is gorgeous, I have never seen one like it!
It is a beautiful butterfly and I can understand how one butterfly can be so inspiring...it will be a while before NY sees any butterflies I think..although it is very warm for March..thank you for adding some delicate beauty to Nature Notes...Michelle
What a treat, to see a butterfly emerge from its cocoon. It's a beauty!
The idea of metamorphosis never fails to wow me.
I love how vivid the caterpillar and butterfly are.
Dear Kanak, what a very striking butterfly! So dramatic looking, I do hope the caterpillars are successful. The caterpillar of the other butterfly looks very striking too.
I just enjoyed your previous post also. You do have some lovely birds in your neighbourhood. Those Coral Trees are wonderful magnets :-)
Your photographs, Kanak, are simply stunning. I am still waiting to see my first caterpillar of the season!
Great sighting of the caterpilar. I am always looking for one and never find them. Lovely shots.
Kanak, the butterflies must love you. WHen I see a caterpillar, I just shriek and remove it as fast as I can. I've seen them gobbling up leaves in minutes and didn't even think it's worth identifying them. After reading your post, I'm going to be more thoughtful about caterpillars. I've just started a lemon tree in a container but I really want tips to make it grow well. I hope you will post about your lemon tree sometime.
Gorgeous pictures. I always get stuck on your beautiful header shot -- sometimes I forget why I came. How wonderful to see the butterfly emerge. I'm so impressed!
Hi Kanak, beautiful shots and I can imagine you...how eager u must been to see the beauties...I have finally managed a post in the blog after all this time...it's still a struggle...so long...
Ruby.
How lucky you are to have witnessed the birth of a butterfly! Lovely shots as always.
I LOVE it when someone is actually happy to see caterpillars. :))
A beautiful butterfly and in fact the caterpillar is lovely too. I am working on learning more about butterflies, so this was very interesting to me. Thank you.
I hit send too soon -- meant to say that I would so much love to see a butterfly emerge -- especially in your own yard...that's wonderful. No wonder this one is so special to you.
